A proposito di Charles & Ray Eames
Born in 1907 in St Louis, Missouri-United States, Charles Eames begins architecture studies in 1925 but stop two years later. He travels to Europe and meets the designers Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. In 1930, he started his own architectural firm with Charles Gray.
He works with Eliel Saarinen and his son Eero with whom he wins his first prize during a competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1938, he returns to his architecture studies in at the University of Michigan where he quickly becomes professor of Industrial Design. He meets his wife Ray with whom he's going to work all his life. The couple moves to Hollywood where they starting to build film sets. They invent new plywood assembly technics.
At the brake of WW 2, their innovations are going to be funded by the Navy for the production of splints, stretchers and even fuselages of landing gliders. In 1949, they move into their new home,the famous Pacific Palisades which will become a reference in the field of lightweight plywood construction.
In 1956, the couple continues his research on the forms of molded plywood and ends up with the Eames Lounge Chair. This is a huge hit which sold over 6 million copies worldwide. The couple has also completed numerous educational films; one of these is the remarkable film "Powers of 10".
